Why Bovey Tracey?

You’ll find Bovey Tracey perched on the edge of dramatic Dartmoor National Park, and an ideal base if you want to explore the outstanding natural landscape of South Devon and the moorlands. Known as the gateway to Dartmoor, Bovey Tracey is a charming and historic place to stay, with a strong rural heritage.

Bovey Tracey is a beautiful and welcoming town where the winding streets and picturesque parks provide the perfect environment to relax in. Home to many restaurants, bars, coffee shops and attractions, Bovey Tracey is the ideal place to unwind.

For retail, Bovey Tracey is typical of the strong tradition of towns in Devon offering a range of quality independent retailers, with delicatessens, high-class butchers, farm produce, and fair-trade shops.

Taking its name from the river Bovey, the town is an established Saxon settlement, with its second name coming from the de Tracey family who ruled the area after the Norman Conquest. Bovey Tracey was the scene of a major battle during the English Civil War, which ended in victory for Cromwell’s troops. Their names live on today with the Cromwell Arms pub and a ruined priory arch also named after Cromwell.

With the wild and imposing Haytor as a backdrop, Bovey Tracey is ideal for exploring the Tors of Dartmoor. There’s a range of outdoor sports for adrenaline junkies, including climbing, canoeing and walking. Dartmoor is one of the UK’s National Parks and covers 358 square miles. A place of myth, history and natural beauty, with many antiquities and natural wonders, you can easily access everything that Dartmoor has to offer from Bovey Tracey.

The Terrace Café is at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen – a great day out for anyone who loves the finer things in life. The Guild is in the converted Riverside Mill and you can watch craftsmen and women create unique jewellery, sculpture, prints, glass and textiles, from the traditional to the modern. With a great craft shop and spacious gallery, the Devon Guild of Craftsmen is a world-class attraction. The House of Marbles in Bovey Tracey is a great family attraction where you can visit the glass, games, marble and pottery museums.

Our Teignmouth Team

Why Teignmouth?

Located on the main South West train line, Teignmouth is an easy journey from London, along the most spectacular coastal train route in the country. Dartmoor National Park, Exeter and Torquay are just a few miles from Teignmouth, making it an ideal central location to explore the rest of South Devon.

Things to do in Teignmouth

Teignmouth is the ideal family holiday destination – with a Victorian Pier, lido, play park, crazy golf and skate park all within easy reach of the beaches and town centre to keep the kids entertained.

Teignmouth beaches are great for family days out, Teignmouth Town beach is a long expanse of sand with the pier, arcades and promenade. Local water sports are also on offer if you want to try kayaking, coasteering or paddle boarding. Teignmouth River Beach is full of beautiful fishing boats and has a wonderful quaint village feel – perfect for coastal walks with the dog.

The town itself has beautiful Georgian buildings and a lovely high street for a bit of retail therapy. On the promenade, Teignmouth Pavilions hosts a regular cinema and child friendly events all year round. Teignmouth Arts Quarter is full of galleries, TAAG, Voyage Art, Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery which sells and displays Robert Lenkiewicz‘a work. There are also the cafes, back beach and other stylish individual businesses.

Across the river is the quaint village of Shaldon which has beautiful views across to Teignmouth, and is home to the Ness and a smugglers tunnel cut through the South Devon cliffs.

Ideal for walking, Teignmouth is on the South West Coast Path, as well as at the end of the Templer Way, an 18 mile walking trail which traces the historic line of granite being taken from the quarries at Haytor on Dartmoor, to the docks at Teignmouth. The walk follows the Stover Canal, and is one of many scenic footpaths covering South Devon.

With the sea and the River Teign, Teignmouth is gaining reputation as a gourmet destination. Most of the local seafood will have been caught that morning – you can watch the boats come in at the River Beach landing their catches before it goes to the local restaurants.

In March, the Classical Music Festival and the Poetry Festival host events, recitals and workshops around the town. The Folk Festival in June is one of the top festivals in the UK – a 3-day event where the town atmosphere is electric.

During the summer holidays there are carnivals and regattas in Teignmouth and Shaldon that the kids will love. In September there is the Taste of the Teign Food Festival, and in November, the town is alive with the local Jazz Festival.

Teignmouth dates back to 1044, when the town was originally two separate villages. By the 1800s it was fashionable with tourists, and to this day remains a functioning harbour. If you want to explore the history of the area further, a visit to the Teign Heritage Centre is a must.
